Highway Song (for Jase) (from Destroying Lives For Fun And Profit, 1996)

Cruising down the highway on another mission
Quarter tank of gas, caffeine, and the Velvet Underground
Swerving around road kill and blowing past pick up trucks
Maybe we’ll wind up in some grease pit or a book store or a punk show we didn’t know about
Where ever the road will take us
Coast into a gas station and blow some more cash
$5 for gas, I get coffee, you get tea
look to the left look to the right all’s clear
and it’s back on the road to conquor the world
they say we have no future and maybe they’re right
but none of it matters when you’re on the road
with a quarter tank of gas, caffeine, and the Velvet Underground
“And everything is all right”
because we are too young to give a damn and too old to be restrained
